Consensus is an AI-powered academic search engine that finds, analyzes, and synthesizes evidence from peer-reviewed research papers.
Consensus is an AI research platform designed to help students, academics, clinicians, professionals, and evidence-based teams find and understand scientific literature more efficiently. Instead of producing answers from general web content, it first searches a database of more than 220 million peer-reviewed papers and then uses AI to summarize the relevant findings. Its research database draws from sources such as Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, publisher partnerships, and Consensus’s own scholarly-web indexing, and it is updated weekly.
Users can search with keywords, natural-language questions, paper titles, authors, DOI references, Boolean operators, or detailed research instructions. Paper Search provides a traditional list of relevant studies, while Pro analyzes up to 20 papers and produces a citation-backed synthesis. Deep Review handles broader questions by breaking them into subtopics, running multiple targeted searches, examining a larger research set, and producing a structured literature review based on approximately 50 selected papers.
Consensus includes a Consensus Meter that visualizes agreement and disagreement across studies for suitable yes-or-no questions. Study Snapshot extracts details such as methodology, sample size, and study duration, while Ask Paper lets users question the full text of supported papers. Advanced filters can narrow results by publication date, study design, population, sample size, citation count, journal quality, country, field, and open-access availability.
My Library allows users to save and organize papers into collections and search within saved or uploaded research. Consensus is also available as a ChatGPT app and through MCP and API options, allowing scientific search and cited evidence to be incorporated into external AI workflows.
A permanent Free tier includes unlimited paper searches with limited Pro messages, Deep Reviews, and Study Snapshots. Paid plans increase AI research allowances, while Teams and Enterprise plans add centralized administration, billing, training, and institutional features.
